New Play Development: Ethel Woolson Lab

This week I'm diving into millennial dating culture with Rachel Graf Evans, this year's Ethel Woolson Lab recipient at Working Title Playwrights. Frequently when working on new play development, I am serving as director and dramaturg. This process with WTP has been a luxury, allowing me to focus solely on dramaturgy. I am energized by the process of working closely with a writer. There is such vitality and trust in a good working relationship. We will present a reading of Pheromone this coming Sunday at 7:30pm at the Alliance Theatre's 3rd Floor Black Box.

The Important Work

When You Know Your Teaching Is Working

Last night we opened the second event of our Unproducible Plays: Year of Asian Voices series. We presented a staged reading of Orange by Aditi Kapil. As I reflected on the week of working with these actors and the impact it had on me I was struck with the realization that I had NEVER seen a play about an Indian family. I had seen a few Indian characters in plays and I had seen stories about Chinese and Vietnamese families but not Indian. For many of us in the audience, this reading was radical. The week of rehearsals was slowly working on me, awakening and reprogramming images of what stock characters are... can be. The public conversation among Atlanta theatre producers, Asian artists, theatre patrons and students was enlightening and important.

Where Else But the Theatre?

Oxford closed Kate Hamill's madcap version of Sense & Sensibility last week. Samah Maghjee, pictured here on the front row second from the right, reflected on her past experience in acting, color conscious casting, and the opportunities that my classroom, my connections to professional theatre artists in Atlanta, and Oxford has afforded her. I am grateful for students like Samah and will do anything I can to see that students like her have a voice at the table. Read her reflection for the Oxford Spokesman here.

A Former Student Honors The Impact of My Teaching

Last Thursday I opened When We Were Young and Unafraid - six weeks of hyper-realism! Today, I'm making a jelly belly portrait of Ronald Reagan with this inspiring team! 12 pounds of Jelly Bellies!!!! What a spectrum of experience; a life in the theatre is never boring. Come see the Horizon Apprentice Showcase March 26 & 27 at 8pm and see this latest short musical from the mind of Sloka Krishnan.

Unproducible Plays: Overwhelming Response
A surprising post on my FB feed today. Eric Graise, a former student at the University of West Georgia in my Voice and Movement class, posted the link to this video with the comment "Pam, that teacher was you." I am truly touched to know that I have had such an impact. I remember that day and the power of his work. I am overjoyed to see his success.

Water By the Spoonful Featured on Oxford Website

What a response Atlanta! Our first of three events in the year long series Unproducible Plays: Year of Asian Voices was packed. We featured Art of Gaman by Dipika Guha with an incredible cast: Michelle Pokopac, Skye Passmore, Tiff Morgan, Ryan Vo, Dan Triandiflou, Lizzy Liu, Cat Richmond, and Alessandra Scarcia. Thank you to Dr. Angela Schiller and everyone who came out to be part of the rich conversation. A big shout out to 7Stages for hosting and the theaters that came out to ENGAGE: the Alliance Theatre, Sychronicity, Horizon, Actor's Express, Working Title Playwrights, Essential Theatre and the Chinese Theatre club at Emory University. See you in April for Orange by Aditi Kapil

Check out this great write up we got from the University highlighting our work on Water By the Spoonful. I'm really proud of our partnerships with the Counseling and Career Services and Center for Healthful Living. Alongside the theatre program, these two departments have prepped and supported our students to facilitate the talkback. Win win win.

Dangerous and Wickedly Talented Women

We moved into the space today at the new Windmill Arts Center in East Point. Prepping for The Weird Sisters Theatre Project: Dangerous Women, an immersive theatre project written by six local female playwrights. We're working on Neeley Gossett's Berliner Luft, based on the true story of two women who kill their husbands and run away together. Just in time for halloween. Can't wait for Neeley to develop this into a full length show.
